Name: Betty Sprinkle
Age: 69
Occupation: I retired from Constellation Energy Group in 1999 after 40 years with the company.
Residence: Hampstead
Favorite meal of the day: My evening meal, dinner. I love meat, vegetables and potatoes. I came from a farm family and we always had a full meal. Dad always wanted a big meal at lunch and supper.
Favorite genre of cooking: I like to make desserts, but I also like to make oven meals, casseroles and that sort of thing.
Favorite food to prepare: Pies, especially pecan and strawberry.
Favorite cookbook: I like the church cookbooks, and I have quite a few. Another book that I use is "Maryland Classics," which I got from BG&E in 1985.
Favorite TV chef: I don't really watch them that much. I'm not a TV buff.
|
Favorite spice or herb: I love fresh ground black pepper from peppercorns, and cinnamon.
Favorite childhood food: My grandmother's soft sugar cakes and molasses cakes. They were bigger than cookies and more like a cake texture. There's no recipe that she left to make them.
Favorite comfort food: If I don't feel good, I want browned flour potato soup. You brown the butter and flour, that's where the name comes from.
Favorite vegetable: I love broccoli, and all kinds of greens.
Favorite cooking tool: My left-handed paring knife and my wire whisk.
Favorite sidedish to go with any meal: Fresh or canned fruit and Jell-O salads.
Best time-saving trick: Make sure I have all my ingredients together before I start.
Prefer to cook alone or with others: Alone. I guess because I never had any children, I've always cooked alone. And I can think better alone.
Best thing about cooking: After you put all this time and effort into cooking and everybody tastes it and says "this tastes good!"
Worst thing about cooking: Cleaning up and the mess you've made in the kitchen.
Best known for your: My godchildren say my chocolate cake with peanut butter frosting. That's what they like for their birthdays. They also like my coleslaw and my fudge.
Learned to cook from: My mom. I had a little stool in front of the kitchen sink and I'd stand on it and watch. We were never too much trouble for her, she'd let us try things and learn.
Wish you were better at: Making bread and rolls. It's something I've never had a knack for.
Always looking for a new way to prepare: Meals for two people. So many times recipes are for four to six people.
Advice for aspiring cooks: If a recipe looks good, try it, it may turn out to be one of your favorites.
