Local boxer Tucker runs record to 5-0
Sunday, September 21, 2008

Mark “TNT” Tucker remains undefeated as the Eldersburg light heavyweight boxer recorded his fifth knockout victory.

Tucker won by technical knockout in the fourth round, defeating Carlos Jones at the Maryland Sportsplex in Millersville on Friday.

He knocked Jones down in the first round, hurting him. Then, he finished him off in the fourth round to improve his overall record to 5-0.

Jones entered the fight ranked 29th nationally.

“Mark was in total control of the fight,” said Mark Tucker Sr., Tucker’s father and trainer. “After the knockdown in the first round, Jones ran and was in surivor mode the rest of the fight.

“He hit Mark with a low blow in the third round, and that was Jones’ only effective punch of the night. After the knockdown, Jones wanted no part of Mark’s power.”

Now, Tucker returns to Florida to continue working as a sparring partner for light heavyweight champion Antonio Tarver. Tucker has been working with Tarver for several weeks.

Nicknamed “Magic Man,” Tarver is a former Olympic bronze medalist and the only fighter to ever defeat Roy Jones twice. He has a 27-4 record with 19 knockouts.

Working with an established champion has boosted Tucker’s motivation. Especially after watching fights and shooting pool with Tarver at his palatial estate.

Tarver appeared in “Rocky Balboa,” the last Sylvester Stallone boxing film where Tarver portrayed outspoken boxing champion Mason “The Line” Dixon.

“I’ve learned a lot from him, some different moves,” Tucker said. “It makes you want to work even harder. It’s a first-class operation down there.”

Added Tucker Sr.: “Tarver’s camp believes that Mark is going to go far, and we really appreciate the opportunity to work with Antonio Tarver.”
