After months of adjusting to a new building, teachers and administrators at Ebb Valley Elementary School in Manchester are now focused on continuing to build their school’s identity.
Ebb Valley, the school system’s 23rd elementary school, opened Aug. 26 with 471 students and more than 70 staff members, according to Principal Bob Mitchell. The school is located on Swiper Road, near the Hallie Hills housing development.
Mitchell said that while preparing to open a new school was overwhelming at times, the transition has been smooth. There have been no notable problems.
“Like any new business or home, it has been a learning experience for us,” he said.
The majority of the students came from Manchester Elementary School, which at one point was more than 200 students over capacity. Ebb Valley was built to alleviate overcrowding at Manchester.
“We love having room to move,” said Mitchell, who served as Manchester’s principal from 1996 to 2007.
The next major project for the school system is the opening of Manchester Valley High School, which is under construction. The school, which is being built because of overcrowding at North Carroll High School in Hampstead, is slated to open in August.
Construction at Ebb Valley began in the summer of 2006, and the building was completed this spring.
Staff and administrators began occupying the new school in mid-June, and some teachers began unpacking a materials and setting up their classrooms in July.

Every classroom in the school is equipped with a smart cart, a mobile presentation system that allows teachers to incorporate the Internet, videos and other types of media in their lessons. The cart is an updated and more laptop-driven version of a multimedia cart that was introduced at Parr’s Ridge Elementary School in Mount Airy when it was built in 2005.
During the summer, the 23 classroom teachers received training on how to use the cart and its components, including a laptop, wireless mouse, DVD player and document camera that functions with a data projector installed in the ceiling of each classroom.
