Mount Airy family holding fundraising dinner for diabetes
Friday, October 09, 2009

After the recent surprise diabetes diagnosis of her youngest child, a Mount Airy mother is holding a fundraiser Sunday to fund research for Type 1 diabetes.

The fundraiser will be held at Laurienzo Brick Oven Café in downtown Mount Airy from noon to 4 p.m.

The restaurant will donate a percentage of proceeds from meals sold to the American Diabetes Association.

Ally Queen said her 8-year-old son Cameron Queen was diagnosed with the disease in August. Her 10-year-old daughter Bella has had the disease for eight years.

About 15,000 youths in the United States are newly diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes annually, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Web site.

The disease develops when the body’s immune system destroys pancreatic beta cells, the only cells in the body that make insulin that regulates blood glucose. In order to survive, individuals must have insulin injected or pumped.

Ally Queen said she was initially angry when she received the news of Cameron’s diagnosis. Aside from Bella, diabetes doesn’t run in the family.

“It wasn’t as confusing as it was with Bella’s diagnosis, but I was still angry and blown away that I’d have to do things twice over,” she said.

So far, Ally Queen said Cameron has been taking his diagnosis in stride.

He and his sister check their blood sugars together and make sure both take their insulin.

Ally Queen said the family has raised about $8,000 for the American Diabetes Association.

Last year, Bella Queen was named the 2008 youth ambassador for the Frederick Step Out: Walk to Fight Diabetes event.

Ally Queen said the family will continue to raise money for the ADA through the end of the year. “I think it’s made people more aware,” she said of her family’s fundraising efforts.
