Local Roundup: Mewhirter's double-eagle sends NC golfers past SC
Friday, October 09, 2009

North Carroll’s Cody Mewhirter recorded a spectacular double-eagle on his final hole Thursday at the Links at Challedon to lift his team to an improbable two-stroke victory, 163-165 over host South Carroll.

Mewhirter was trying to drive the green on the 322-yard, par-4 to set himself up for a birdie or perhaps even an eagle opportunity.

“I figured it would be just on the front of the green,” the NC senior said. “We looked for it everywhere and couldn’t find it, and I’m thinking ‘Oh my gosh, what happened, I have to re-tee it.’ My partner, Matt Lutz, said ‘check the hole.’”

So a South Carroll player did just that. And found Mewhirter’s ball.

“I didn’t even know how to react. I was so excited I didn’t know what to think,” he said. “A hole-in-one on a par 4. That’s like a ‘Happy Gilmore’ thing.”

It got even more exciting when Mewhirter and the Panthers realized that had he made a par on the final hole, rather than an albatross, the Panthers would have lost the match. As it was, with a 36 by Mewhirter as well as hole-out eagle by Sam Clark, North Carroll finished with 163 to South Carroll’s 165.

NC improved to 13-2, 5-1 county. SC, led by Scott Andrews’ 37, fell to 8-6, 2-4.
